The Miranda Test: How Well Does Your State Know Its Rights?

The map below reveals how well residents in each state understand their rights under the Miranda warning.

Methodology: The study surveyed 3,067 adults across the United States in August 2026. Respondents completed a short test designed to measure their understanding of Miranda rights, covering common misconceptions around when police are required to issue a Miranda warning, whether questioning must stop after an attorney is requested, what exercising the right to remain silent actually means, and how statements made before a warning may be treated. Responses were scored and aggregated to produce a Miranda Knowledge Score for each state. The survey sample was balanced across key demographic groups, including age, gender and region, to provide a broad representation of U.S. adults.
